Post subject:  Old engines and new gas

What are you guys doing to keep your engines going on this new gas with no lead additive? My 276 Hemi is original, no hardened seats in the heads and I am wondering how long it will last on today gas. Do you guys run lead additive?

What are your thoughts?

Post subject:  The gas............. not a problem for your engine. I have noticed that the new formulations break down very quickly. Use some "stabil" or equivalent went not driving the car.

I was pondering this same question the other day. I suppose the newer formulations have PTFE or some other such additive to keep the upper end properly lubricated? Or am i just high from smelling too much gas.... :shock:

As long as you don't run the car real hard you don't have to worry about it. That is just another one of those rumors when something changes. I had a old farm tractor that I ran a lot harder than we run are cars and it never gave a problem.

I have read that the DeSotos of certain years have hardened seats. So unless you run the car real hard, you should have no problems. I have read this probably 3 or 4 times on this site. My 53 has no problems and we have reformulated fuel with ethanol. However, my car is not a daily driver. My early 70's 390 boat engine is having a problem that could be due to unleaded fuel - not sure yet. I ran it hard, real hard for 15 summers straight every weekend. I have not had time to get this figured out but I suspect the valves or seats. But compression is what it always has been.
