The soft fabric top on my 1931 DeSoto is in fairly good shape and I do not plan on replacing it. I would like to redress it and am wondering what material is appropriate to paint on to preserve and waterproof it.

I have not found anything that really works against the sun except for cover. This is whether I am in Connecticut or Arizona, USA. This is more true for Arizona.

Jerry-are you referring to the vinyl coated cloth covering on a sedan or coupe roof?
As you know new sedan roof vinyl cloth can be bought from LeBaron Bonney or Bill Hirsch but requires removing the roof framework to install.

If you can get vinyl fabric squeaky clean and it isn't too badly checked, try a black vinyl dye with a paint spray gun. This dye process works well for recoloring vinyl upholstery and should impart some degree of water proofing to your roof covering. I would guess the top dressing used back in the days when this car was newer include some kind of tarry substance in a petroleum solvent.
I just called Bill Hirsch who sells top fabric to me and he referred me to Color Plus for Surflex dressing. Call 570-686-3158 and ask for the details on Surflex-the Co name is Color Plus. On a good restoration, we would replace the vinyl covering but I like to know about these shortcuts too.
