My Desoto is on it's last legs, I decided to switch out the original 276 hemi for something new. I don't want fancy or fast, just something that will fit. My question is, what is the best fit for that car? I'd like to change out the motor and transmission (which are original) for something a bit more updated. I just need to know what will play nice with my drive shaft and differential( also, original). any ideas, suggestions? what have you guys/gals tried? any help is appreciated. looking to keep the car automatic also. so basically what's the best engine/transmission combo to put in that car.

Most folks at this site are people that will only replace an De Soto Engine
with a De Soto Engine.

If you locate a 1956 to 1961 Plymouth "A Engine" --- It will bolt to your transmissions Bell Housing.

These engines grew from 277 cubes to 301 cubes to 318 cubes during the same
1956 to 1961 years.

They are also lighter in weight than your engine.

What ever you do --- you must have two center dumping Exhaust Manifolds.

Used to the end of The 1966 Dodge Truck Production Year.

This is another "bolt on".

In 1962 The Bolt Pattern for attaching the transmission was changed and also the "back end" of The Crank Shaft.
