Hi 1929ers, I am based in the U.K. with a 1929 K series Desoto Roadster (called Daphne) that has excessive steering play with a knocking sound in the steering box. I believe this to be a worn sector bush that will need replacing. I have never taken out the steering column and would appreciate any advice on how best to do this. There are a few electric cables coming out of the end and I do not wish to lose the same position relationships with the mechanical bits on re-assembly so any tips would be welcome. What lube should I put back in:?: Many thanks and happy motoring. Regards, Pete |

Hi Peter, The switch for the lights (high and low beam) and tail lights and cowl lights is at the bottom of the steering column. The horn (ground) wire comes down the center of the column and is inside the tubes which also come down the column which are connected to the throttle and light levers on the steering wheel. You could take a picture to make sure you connect the wires and throttle linkage correctly. I would just use grease in the steering box or very heavy gear oil as they have a tendency to leak. Good luck, Fred |
