Post subject:  Clutch and Fluid Drive Questions

When I first drove my 48 Custom Club Coupe I noticed that the clutch pedal rested about 1 inch forward of the brake. I thought nothing of it and drove the car. I began to notice slippage when in a hard pull like up a grade. It got much worse so I read the shop manual about the clutch and realized it was far out of adjustment. The pedal should be aligned with the brake and it should have 1 inch free play. It was not aligned and had no free play, so I adjusted the clutch as directed in the manual. The slippage is much less now, but still there. I checked the fluid drive and it was full, no leaks.
Can the fluid drive slip when under a hard pull? Could the remaining slippage be due to the fluid drive even though it is full? Should I put a new clutch in it?

No, the fluid drive cannot slip, It sounds like you need a new clutch.

Thanks Paul. I came to the conclusion that the clutch is bad. Just received the new one today. Now I hope for the energy to install it.

I don't know if you have had a transmission out before, if not be carefull, they are very heavy.

It looks heavy. I have found a mechanic who specializes in old cars so I think I will have him do the job. It's been two weeks since I spoke with him so I hope he will start on it soon. If he doesn't I may tackle it myself. If I do I will use a transmission jack.

The manual says to remove the solenoid and governor, I assume for clearance. I can see the solenoid unscrews and the manual shows springs and a ball valve. Are the springs under tension and will they come flying out if not careful?

The manual has hardly anything about the governor. Since the governor is round I assume it unscrews too. Are there any parts that will come out with it?

The manual says to drain the transmission. Is this necessary?

The governor and solenoid both unscrew for clearance, nothing will come flying out.yes you should drain the oil. If the transmission falls over you will have oil all over.
