Hi guys,
My 46 desoto fluid drive is pretty low, haven't driven it in a while, so what fluid should I put in it please?

I did some digging and found it, thanks to all that were scratching their heads, lol.
No guys, y'all are the best and someone has always gave me the answers to any of my questions and for that I thank y'all so much

Rick, just curious but what did you find for the fluid? 10 wt. non detergent oil is what Chrysler said to put in them but I read an interesting article several years ago, written by someone who sounded like he knew what he was talking about, that said hydraulic fluid ISO 32 was better. I have had the hydraulic fluid in mine for years without a problem. Just don't put detergent oil in it. Les

I believe the 10w non detergent oil is for the transmission.
The hydraulic fluid is for the fluid drive.

Gents,

perhaps the article you are remembering was written by James Douglas (NDC #4332)and published in the May-June 2016 edition of the DeSoto Adventures. While James says he's not an engineer, I'd say he did a pretty thorough analysis of the original spec vs currently available fluids. The "Cliff's Notes" version of his article says a hydraulic "circulating oil" with anti foam additives such as an ISO 22 fluid would match the original very well, but he prefers to err on the conservative side and use the slightly higher viscosity ISO 32 oil. He says this oil is available at Grainger Supply.

It looks to me like James was only talking about fluid couplers. He did not mention Fluid-Torque drive or the M-4 (vacuum shift) or M-6 Hydraulic shift transmissions.

I always used the 10w non-detergent for the fluid drive in my 42.

Hi dean,
Sorry for the delay but got really busy and went out of town.
After extensive reading I found that hydraulic fluid 134 was what the replacement for the original fluid is for the fluid drive.
Put that in mine and works great!
10w non detergent oil is for the tranny.
This 46 desoto custom I have was a one owner out of Heber springs, ark and the family of the parents that past away said their dad never had the motor worked on except tune ups and oil change.
The motor will start right up and runs so quiet, the ride is so smooth.
Still has the original owners manual and did not have rust at all except some on the roof but not one rust hole.
Got real lucky on this one and Orilleys where I live submitted pics to see it will go in their calander.
